Using BOMArchivehelper for Creating and Uncompressing Archives on Mac OS X |
BOMArchivehelper isn't a program that you access directly. It's located at /System/Library/CoreServices/BOMArchivehelper but you either use the File menu to archive files with it or you use Get Info to uncompress files with it. See below. To use BOMArchivehelper to compress files, choose File > Create Archive of <selection> in Finder.
BOMArchivehelper is the default program to uncompress zip files (by double clicking them). However, every Mac I have ever aquired has had Stuffit Expander installed on it. So if you are like me you will have to reset BOMArchivehelper to be your defualt program for uncompressing archivies. To do this:
- Select a zip or gz file in Finder.
- Choose File > Get Info.
- In the "Open with" section choose BOMArchiveHelper. If it's not in the list choose "Other" and find BOMArchiveHelper at the path mentioned above.
- Click on the "Change All..." button.
